Primary Rule of Citizenship of United States: Jus soli, Jus sanguine:
Jus soli – Citizenship by Birth in the Country: All persons born in the United States are citizens (with some exceptions).
Jus sanguine – Citizenship by Birth outside the Country: Children born outside the U.S. to citizen parents are U.S. citizens, with certain restrictions.
US Policy on Dual Citizenship:
US government recognizes that dual citizenship exists, but does not endorse it as a matter of policy because of the problems it may cause.
The Certificate of U.S. Citizenship:
(Form N-560 or N-561) CUSC is a document issued by the US Government as proof of US citizenship for individuals born to us citizen parents outside of US and to those born overseas and residing in the United States and at least one of the parents became naturalized when the individual was under 18 years of age and met the special conditions of law.
The Certificate of U.S. Naturalization:
(Form N-550 or N-570) CUSC is a document issued by the US Government as proof of a person having obtained US citizenship through naturalization, which is the legal process of obtaining a new nationality.
The Certificate of US Naturalization has been issued since October 1, 1991 by the USCIS, and on or before September 30, 1991 it was issued by the Federal Courts and particular State Courts.
The United States Certificate of Naturalization is proof of an individual’s U.S. citizenship through naturalization.
18 years of age
Lawful permanent resident (LPR)
Resided continuously as a LPR for at least 5 years prior to application (with no single absence from the U.S. for more than 1 year)
Physical presence in the U.S. for at least 30 months of the 5 years prior to application
Ability to read, write and speak English
Knowledge and understanding of U.S. history and government
Good moral character
Attachment to the principles of the constitution
Favorable disposition toward the United States
